Welcome to the Garden Route

The Garden Route runs for about 300 km along the south coast of South Africa, between the towns of Mossel Bay and Storms River, in a strip of land squeezed between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Indian Ocean. Its name comes from the lush green landscape, in which lagoons, lakes, rivers, indigenous forest, fynbos and beaches follow one another, and it is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

The main towns each have a distinct character. Wilderness has lagoons and dunes, Knysna has a large lagoon with two rocky Heads at its mouth and a forest full of woodcarvers and cafés, Plettenberg Bay has some of the country's best beaches and the Robberg peninsula, and Tsitsikamma National Park has coastal forest, sea cliffs and a famous suspension bridge. Inland, Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital, with the spectacular Cango Caves.

It is a place for driving, walking, kayaking and adventure. The Bloukrans Bridge has the world's highest commercial bridge bungee jump, whales and dolphins can be seen from the shore, and indigenous forests hold big yellowwood trees. It is a highlight of any South African trip, and best explored at a leisurely pace, with at least four or five days.

How to Plan a US National Parks Road Trip

American national parks are no longer places you turn up at. Timed entry, permit lotteries and mandatory shuttles now govern the popular ones, and the distances between them are larger than almost any visitor expects. Here is how to plan around both.

Where to go

Choosing a Mediterranean Coast

The Mediterranean coasts in this guide are not interchangeable. Some have sand and some have rock; some are glamorous and some are cheap; two of them are effectively closed for half the year. This is a comparison by the things that decide whether a coastal week works — swimming, crowds, cost, transport and what there is to do when you get out of the water.
