Welcome to Jericho
Jericho lies in the Jordan Valley, about 250 metres below sea level and about 10 km north of the Dead Sea. It is a green oasis in a barren landscape, fed by a spring that has flowed for millennia, and it is often called the oldest city in the world. Excavations at Tell es-Sultan, the mound at the edge of the modern town, have revealed a settlement that dates back around ten thousand years, with a stone tower and wall from about 8000 BCE that are among the oldest such structures ever found.
The Bible describes the walls of Jericho falling to Joshua and the Israelites, and the New Testament tells of Jesus passing through and healing a blind man, and of Zacchaeus climbing a sycamore tree to see him. Christian tradition places Jesus's forty days of temptation on a cliff above the town, where a Greek Orthodox monastery now clings to the rock.
The town is also in the Palestinian Authority's Area A, and it is the West Bank's most easily reached destination outside Bethlehem. It is small and hot in summer, and best in winter. Tell es-Sultan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
