Welcome to Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, is a seascape of nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets rising steeply from calm green water, many topped with jungle and pierced by caves and lagoons. The name means Bay of the Descending Dragon, from a legend in which a dragon family came down to defend the Vietnamese from invaders and their spitting jewels became the islands. UNESCO inscribed the bay in 1994.

It is the most visited natural attraction in Vietnam, and the standard way to see it is an overnight cruise on a wooden-style junk, with kayaking, a cave visit, a swim and a seafood dinner. The classic route, from Bai Chay near Ha Long City, is popular and busy, and many travellers prefer the quieter waters of Lan Ha Bay, south of Cat Ba Island, or Bai Tu Long Bay to the north-east.

Cruise quality varies widely, and it is worth choosing carefully. The bay is at its best in the early morning and evening, when the tour boats thin out and the mist gives the islands a painterly look.

Choosing a Mediterranean Coast

The Mediterranean coasts in this guide are not interchangeable. Some have sand and some have rock; some are glamorous and some are cheap; two of them are effectively closed for half the year. This is a comparison by the things that decide whether a coastal week works — swimming, crowds, cost, transport and what there is to do when you get out of the water.

Packing by Season and Trip Type

Most packing advice is a list of things. This is the opposite: the small number of decisions that determine whether your luggage helps or hinders, organised by the kind of trip you are actually taking.
