Welcome to Lake Balaton
Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe, about 77 km long and 14 km across at its widest, but only around 3 metres deep on average, so its water warms quickly in summer. It has been Hungary's favourite holiday destination for over a century, called the 'Hungarian sea', and every summer the shores fill with families, sailors and swimmers.
The two shores are different. The south shore is flat, with sandy beaches and lively resort towns such as Siófok, known for parties. The north shore is hilly and more attractive, with volcanic hills around Badacsony, vineyards, lavender fields, and historic towns. The Tihany Peninsula has a Benedictine abbey from the 11th century and views of the lake, and Balatonfüred, an elegant spa town, has a shady promenade named after the poet Rabindranath Tagore.
At the western end, Keszthely has the grand baroque Festetics Palace, and nearby Hévíz has the largest thermal lake in Europe. The region is also a wine country, producing crisp whites like Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű. Two or three days on the north shore gives the best taste, ideally in June or September.
