Welcome to Lucerne
Lucerne is a compact city of about 85,000 people at the point where the Reuss river leaves Lake Lucerne, ringed by mountains. Its symbol is the Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden footbridge from the 14th century with painted panels and an octagonal stone water tower, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1993. The old town has painted facades, medieval walls and squares, and the whole centre can be walked in an afternoon.
The setting is what makes Lucerne special. Mount Pilatus, legendary as the home of dragons, and Rigi, the 'Queen of the Mountains', both rise from the lake, and both can be climbed by cog railway and cable car. Historic paddle steamers cross the lake to villages such as Vitznau and Weggis, and a day's excursion combines a boat, a mountain and a train ride.
Lucerne is also a place with culture. The Lion Monument, carved into a cliff in the 1820s, commemorates Swiss guards killed in Paris in 1792, the Swiss Museum of Transport is one of Europe's best, and the KKL concert hall hosts a major music festival each summer. It is about 45 minutes from Zurich, making it an easy first base.
