Welcome to Tortuguero
Tortuguero National Park is a network of natural canals winding through lowland rainforest on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast. There are no roads, so everything arrives by boat or small plane, and the sense of remoteness is part of the appeal.
The park is best known for the turtles that nest on the beach: green turtles from July to October, leatherbacks from March to June, and hawksbills and loggerheads in smaller numbers. Guided night tours are strictly regulated. Day trips by boat reveal caimans, river otters, monkeys, sloths and a huge variety of birds.
The village of Tortuguero is small and relaxed, with a handful of restaurants and guesthouses. Rain is possible at any time, so bring a poncho. Most visitors come on a two- or three-day package that includes transport, lodging and guided activities.
