Welcome to Battambang

Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city but feels like a quiet provincial town, with faded French-colonial shopfronts, a river, and a creative community. It is a favourite stop between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, and many travellers stay longer than planned.

The famous bamboo train, or norry, is a bamboo platform on rails powered by a small engine, and gives a fun if touristy ride. Nearby, Wat Banan sits on a hilltop with five towers, Phnom Sampov holds a cave where millions of bats stream out at dusk, and the countryside is dotted with villages and rice fields.

Art is a theme here. Phare Ponleu Selpak, a non-profit arts school, offers circus performances, and small galleries and cafes show local artists. It is an easy place to relax, with good food and a gentle pace.

A Country-by-Country Food Primer

Eating well abroad is mostly a matter of knowing when meals happen, how the menu is structured and which dish belongs to the place you are standing in. This covers all three for the five countries in this guide, plus the signals that separate a restaurant that feeds locals from one that feeds coaches.

Practical

Packing by Season and Trip Type

Most packing advice is a list of things. This is the opposite: the small number of decisions that determine whether your luggage helps or hinders, organised by the kind of trip you are actually taking.
