Welcome to Kalmar and Oland
Kalmar is a gentle coastal town on the Baltic Sea, with one of the finest Renaissance castles in northern Europe. Kalmar Castle, rebuilt in the 16th century, was the site of the Kalmar Union that joined Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and today hosts exhibitions and events.
A six-kilometre bridge links Kalmar to Oland, a long, narrow island with a unique landscape. The Stora Alvaret limestone plain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with rare plants and birds, hundreds of old windmills, sandy beaches and the ruins of Borgholm Castle. The summer palace of the royal family, Solliden, is nearby.
Oland is best enjoyed by bike, and summer weather is among the sunniest in Sweden. Midsummer and the Oland Harvest Festival draw crowds. Cultural events, farm shops and the long coast make this a relaxed family-friendly stop.
