Welcome to Dalarna

Dalarna, or Dalecarlia, is considered the cultural heart of Sweden, a landscape of forests, lakes and red wooden cottages that is the source of many national symbols. The little wooden Dala horse, painted red and decorated, is made here, and traditional music, dress and crafts remain part of daily life.

Lake Siljan, formed by an ancient meteor impact, is the centre of the region. Villages like Leksand and Rattvik host Midsummer celebrations with maypoles, folk dancing and flowers in the hair. The Falun copper mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shows the mining history that once funded the Swedish empire.

In winter, Mora is the finish line of the Vasaloppet, a legendary 90-kilometre cross-country ski race. In summer, there are cycling routes, canoeing, swimming and folk festivals. Dalarna is easy to reach from Stockholm and suits a long weekend.
