Welcome to Mirissa

Mirissa is a small fishing village turned beach resort on Sri Lanka's south coast, with a crescent of golden sand, palm trees and a lively line of beach restaurants and bars. The bay is calm from November to April, when the sea is good for swimming and the sunsets are famously colourful. It is popular with backpackers and couples, and is more relaxed than nearby Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa.

The town's claim to fame is whale watching. Offshore, the seabed drops steeply, and blue whales, the biggest animals on earth, pass on migration between about November and April, along with sperm whales, Bryde's whales and dolphins. Boats leave early morning, and trips last about four hours. Not all operators behave responsibly, so choose one that follows guidelines and keeps a distance.

Other highlights include Coconut Tree Hill, a headland with a cluster of tall palms, Parrot Rock, connected to the beach at low tide, Secret Beach and the surf at nearby Weligama. Two or three days makes a relaxing stay at the end of a Sri Lanka trip.

Where to go

Choosing a Mediterranean Coast

The Mediterranean coasts in this guide are not interchangeable. Some have sand and some have rock; some are glamorous and some are cheap; two of them are effectively closed for half the year. This is a comparison by the things that decide whether a coastal week works — swimming, crowds, cost, transport and what there is to do when you get out of the water.

Practical

Packing by Season and Trip Type

Most packing advice is a list of things. This is the opposite: the small number of decisions that determine whether your luggage helps or hinders, organised by the kind of trip you are actually taking.
