Welcome to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier
Franz Josef and Fox, twin glaciers a short drive apart on the South Island's West Coast, are unusual worldwide for how far they descend toward sea level and temperate rainforest — a combination of steep terrain and heavy Tasman Sea rainfall found in only a handful of places on Earth.
Both sit within Te Wahipounamu, the same UNESCO World Heritage area that covers Fiordland, and both are retreating overall even as they occasionally advance in wetter years, a visible, ongoing reminder of the wider glacier's response to a changing climate.
The two small townships that share the glaciers' names are quiet, practical bases rather than resort towns — most visitors are here for a specific activity, whether a valley walk, a scenic flight or a heli-hike onto the ice itself.
