Welcome to Monteverde

Monteverde sits on the Continental Divide at around 1,400 metres, and its cool, misty forests hold an astonishing variety of life. More than 2,500 plant species, 400 bird species and over 100 species of mammals live in the reserves, from the elusive resplendent quetzal to hummingbirds, monkeys and thousands of insects.

The area was settled by American Quakers in the 1950s, who helped protect the forest. Today, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Santa Elena Reserve and Curi-Cancha are the main sites, offering trails, hanging bridges and guided night walks. Ziplines and canopy tours are popular alternatives.

The weather is cool and often misty, so bring a jacket. Santa Elena is the main town, with restaurants and shops, while the access roads are rough and unpaved. A guided walk is worth it for spotting wildlife.

A Country-by-Country Food Primer

Eating well abroad is mostly a matter of knowing when meals happen, how the menu is structured and which dish belongs to the place you are standing in. Practical

Packing by Season and Trip Type

Most packing advice is a list of things. This is the opposite: the small number of decisions that determine whether your luggage helps or hinders, organised by the kind of trip you are actually taking.
