Welcome to Pucon and Villarrica

Pucon sits on the shore of Lake Villarrica, with the perfect snow-capped cone of Villarrica volcano looming above. It is Chile's adventure capital, offering volcano climbing, white-water rafting, canyoning, horse riding, hot springs and skiing, with a lively summer scene of beach cafes and bars.

The star activity is the guided climb of Villarrica, one of the most active volcanoes in South America. In good weather, the climb takes about five hours up and you can look into a glowing crater before sliding down on a snow chute. Huerquehue National Park, with its araucaria forest and lakes, offers excellent day hikes.

The region is also the heartland of the Mapuche people, and visitors can arrange cultural visits to learn about traditions, language and food. Summer (December to March) is the busy season, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the town is full of life.

Eating well abroad is mostly a matter of knowing when meals happen, how the menu is structured and which dish belongs to the place you are standing in. Practical

Packing by Season and Trip Type
