Welcome to Mondulkiri

Mondulkiri is Cambodia's largest and least-populated province, a high plateau of rolling hills, forest and cooler air. The provincial capital, Sen Monorom, is a small town where Bunong indigenous communities and migrants live, and it serves as a base for waterfalls, forest walks and elephant visits.

The highlight for many is visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary, where rescued elephants live in natural surroundings and visitors observe, feed and walk with them, without riding. Several waterfalls, such as Bou Sra, are within an easy drive. Treks go deeper into the forest, where wildlife is rare but birdlife is excellent.

The weather is cooler than the lowlands, and the pace is slow. Roads are partly rough, so travel takes time, but the hills and fresh air make it a restful and different side of Cambodia.

A Country-by-Country Food Primer

Eating well abroad is mostly a matter of knowing when meals happen, how the menu is structured and which dish belongs to the place you are standing in. Practical

Packing by Season and Trip Type

Most packing advice is a list of things. This is the opposite: the small number of decisions that determine whether your luggage helps or hinders, organised by the kind of trip you are actually taking.
